The Best Business Models to Start With Now
What kind of business should I actually start?
Pick a model by how fast it turns effort into cash and how well it fits your unfair advantage — not by which model is fashionable. For most founders starting today, the strongest openings are productised services, vertical software for an unglamorous industry, operator-led local businesses, and paid communities or education with a real outcome. Pure consumer apps and marketplaces are the hardest games on the board.
Model choice is the most consequential decision of your first year and it is usually made by imitation. Founders pick SaaS because SaaS is what founders pick. Then they spend eighteen months discovering that SaaS has the slowest revenue ramp of any model available to a solo operator.
Rate every model on four axes
- ·Time to first euro — how many weeks until someone pays you.
- ·Effort-to-revenue link — does revenue require your hours forever, or does it detach?
- ·Capital required — can you start without borrowing?
- ·Fit with your unfair advantage — network, skill, credibility, access.
| Model | First euro | Detaches from your hours? | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Productised service | 1–3 weeks | Partly, with a team | You already have a deliverable skill |
| Vertical software | 2–6 months | Yes | You know one industry deeply |
| Local operating business | 2–8 weeks | Yes, with staff | You want cashflow over multiples |
| Paid education / community | 2–6 weeks | Yes | You have a track record others want |
| Marketplace | 6–18 months | Yes | You can hand-fill both sides yourself |
| Consumer app | 12+ months | Yes | You have distribution before product |
The four strongest openings right now
Productised services. A fixed scope, a fixed price, a fixed turnaround. It converts a skill into a repeatable product without building software. Cash arrives in weeks, and it is the best possible research for a future tool.
Vertical software for unglamorous industries. Waste haulage, dental labs, marine services, agricultural contractors, funeral homes. Small markets, no competition from well-funded generalists, customers who answer the phone, and pricing power because you are replacing paper.
Operator-led local businesses. Cleaning, home services, specialist retail, food. Deeply unfashionable, immediately cash-generative, and increasingly winnable because most incumbents have no functioning website, booking flow, or follow-up.
Paid education with a verifiable outcome. Not 'a course'. A cohort, programme or membership where the promise is a result — certification passed, first client won, system installed. The market is saturated with content and starved of accountability.
Choose the model that pays you soonest for the thing you are already good at. Ambition can come later; cash cannot.

Avoid
- —Choosing a model because it has the best exit multiple. You have to survive to the exit.
- —Marketplaces without a plan to manually supply one side for the first six months.
- —Any model where you cannot describe the first customer.
“Given my skills, network and capital, rank the business models I should realistically start with and explain the trade-off of each.”
