Marketing When You're One Person With No Budget

How do I get customers without a marketing team or ad spend?

The short answer

Own one channel completely before touching a second. For most small companies the honest options are direct outreach, one narrow community, or publishing something genuinely useful — and only one of the three fits your temperament. Commit to it for ninety days with weekly volume you can actually sustain, and judge it on conversations started, not impressions.

Small-company marketing is not a smaller version of big-company marketing. You do not have budget, brand or patience. What you have is the ability to do things that do not scale, personally, with more specificity than any team could justify.

Direct outreachFastComfortable being ignored50 personalised messages
One communityMediumGenuinely interested in the people5 useful contributions

Paid advertising is a fourth option, but it is an amplifier, not a discovery tool. Do not run ads until you know your conversion rate and what a customer is worth. Ads on an unproven offer buy you expensive silence.

The ninety-day rule

Pick one channel. Commit ninety days at a volume you can hold. At the end, look at one number: conversations with qualified people. If it is rising, double. If it is flat, change the message before you change the channel — most channel failures are message failures.

The one asset worth building early

A list you own — email, phone, or a customer database. Every platform audience is rented and every platform eventually changes the terms. A thousand people who chose to hear from you is a more durable asset than a hundred thousand followers.

Remember this

Two mediocre channels lose to one owned channel. Choose by temperament, because the only channel that works is the one you'll still be doing in month three.

Do this next

  • Choose one channel based on temperament, not on what works for others.20 minutes
  • Set the weekly minimum and put it in the calendar as a recurring block.10 minutes
  • Rewrite your core message to name a specific situation, not an industry.45 minutes
  • Start collecting emails on day one, even with nothing to send yet.30 minutes

Avoid

  • Being present on five platforms at 20% effort.
  • Judging a channel on followers rather than conversations.
  • Running ads before you know what a customer is worth.
Take it further

Pick my one channel based on my business and personality, then give me a ninety-day plan with a weekly volume I can sustain.
