Should You Build a Website or a Product First?
Do I need a website, or should I go straight to building the product?
Build a website first if you sell something a human delivers — services, consulting, physical goods, local businesses. Build a product first if the product itself is the only way anyone can experience the value. When genuinely unsure: a one-page site plus a manual, human-delivered version of the service beats a half-built product every time.
This is the most common fork a new founder hits, and it is usually argued badly — as a matter of taste, or of what the founder can build. It is neither. It is a question about where the value is created.
The rule
| If… | Start with | Because |
|---|---|---|
| A human delivers the value (agency, consulting, trades, coaching, catering) | Website | The site is the shopfront and the qualifier. Delivery already works — it's you. |
| The value only exists when software does the work | Product | A landing page collects emails, not evidence. Nobody can feel the value until it runs. |
| You sell a physical product | Website | Pre-orders and one good product page validate demand before you commit to inventory. |
| You are not sure | Website + manual delivery | Sell the outcome, deliver it by hand, and let the repeated manual work tell you exactly what to automate. |
The website-first path
- 01One page. Outcome headline, who it's for, three proof points, price or price range, one booking link.
- 02Deliver the first three clients entirely by hand — spreadsheets, calls, email. No system.
- 03Log every repeated task. The tasks you do more than five times become v1 of the product.
- 04Only then decide whether the product is worth building, or whether you already own a good services business.
The product-first path
Go here only when the software is the experience — a tool, a marketplace, a workflow that cannot be faked. Even then, scope v1 to a single job that one user can complete alone, in one sitting, and pay for. Settings, teams, dashboards and admin panels are v2 by definition.
A website sells a promise. A product delivers it. Build the one that unlocks money soonest.
Do this next
- Answer in writing: who creates the value, a human or the software?10 minutes
- If website-first: draft the one-page outline (headline, who, proof, price, booking).1 hour
- If product-first: write the single job v1 must complete end-to-end.30 minutes
- Set a decision date to revisit once you have three paying customers.2 minutes
Avoid
- —Building both at once with half attention.
- —A five-page marketing site before a single customer exists.
- —Automating a process you have never run manually.
“Based on my business, tell me whether to build a website or a product first, and give me the one-week plan for whichever you pick.”
